Matthew McConaughey

Matthew McConaughey says that his new movie Mud reminds him of movie classics of the eighties such as Stand By Me.

The actor returned to the big screen last week as he teamed up with director Jeff Nichols for Mud - s script that the director also wrote.

And McConaughey admits that there was a bit of a nostalgic feel to the film for him personally.

Speaking to the Press Association the actor said: "Everything about the film feels like an Eighties classic to me, with a full narrative, with entrances and exits and pacing and deliberation - like Stand By Me.

"There's nothing cynical about it, and no-one is ugly - everyone has reasons for what they're doing."

"In a way, this film lives in the 1980s for me so it's a trip back to my youth, back to high school, when I had my first loves."

McConaughey has taken his career in a completely different direction in recent years and Mud follows on from The Lincoln Lawyer, Magic Mike and Killer Joe.

And there are plenty more gritty roles from McConaughey as he has completed work on Wolf on Wall Street, which is directed by Martin Scorsese, and Dallas Buyers Club.

Mud is out now.
