Matt Smith says he thinks How To Catch A Monster is going to be an 'exciting' project.
The Doctor Who star has been cast if the Ryan Gosling's directorial debut - which is about to begin filming.
And Smith admits that the audition was all quite laid back as Gosling filmed all of it on his mobile phone.
Speaking to Total Film the actor said: "I was in New York and I was about to fly back, and then I got a phone call saying Ryan wanted to meet me and come over. So I read his film and I thought it was brilliant.
"And then I auditioned and we spent about four hours together doing some stuff, and he filmed it on his iPhone. And that was it. And now I'm going off to shoot it in a couple of weeks.
"I'm really excited. I think he's really clever, and I think it's going to be an exciting project."
How To Catch A Monster is set to be the biggest film role of Smith's career so far as he is joined on the cast list by Saoirse Ronan, Christina Hendricks and Eva Mendes.
While we are use to seeing Smith as The Doctor in the hit BBC series he has been flexing his dramatic muscles with Bert & Dickie and Christopher and His Kind in recent years.
How To Catch A Monster is released next year.
