Freeman - who starred in the 'Hobbit' film franchise and is set to appear in the eagerly-awaited 'Captain America: Civil War' - believes he's a divisive figure among the public, but he appreciates the positive reaction he receives from his own fans.

Asked about his own popularity, Martin told BANG Showbiz: "It's nice that people like things. I'd rather be liked than hated - and of course, I am also hated.

"But it's good to work on things that people watch. I try not to take too much notice of that side of things. If you start playing the result before you've done the game ... you have to get your head down and do the work first."

However, as Martin prepares to make his first on-screen appearance alongside some of Marvel's most famous characters, such as Captain America and Iron Man, he admitted he's simply riding in the slipstream of the studio's success.

The actor - who also stars alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in the British crime drama series 'Sherlock' - said: "I can't take any credit for Marvel. That's a train that was already moving before I got on."
