Rylance flew the British flag last night as he picked up the Oscar for his performance in Cold War drama Bridge of Spies, which is the first Oscar win of his career.

Speaking on stage as he collected his award, Rylance said: "I've always just adored stories - hearing them, seeing them, being in them. For me, to have a chance to work with one, of the greatest storytellers of all time - Steven Spielberg - that's such a great honour.

"He leads with such love that he's surrounded by masters in every craft in his film. I'm so pleased that our film has been nominated so many times."

The Best Supporting Actor category was one of the most exciting and unpredictable of the night as Sylvester Stallone (Creed), Tom Hardy (The Revenant), Christian Bale (The Big Short), and Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight) were all nominated.

Stallone was the favourite to triumph but it did look like it was going to be a head to head between the Rocky star and the British actor - who won a Bafta for his performance just a couple of weeks ago.

Bridge of Spies picked up six nominations, including Best Picture, but Mark Rylance's win was the only one of the night for the Spielberg-directed film.

Bridge of Spies was the first time that Rylance had collaborated with the filmmaker and they have worked together again on the upcoming BFG.
