Margot Robbie wants a Harley Quinn and The Joker to get their own film because "there's so much more to do" with the characters.
Robbie is pushing for a movie that teams her as Harley up with Leto's version of The Clown Prince of Crime from 'Suicide Squad' for a movie which has them as lovers spreading chaos.
'The Legend of Tarzan star said: "I'm trying to make that happen. Not for anything specifically, but just something - there's so much more to do."
Her comments come after Jared Leto revealed that he thought there were already enough deleted scenes of him as The Joker in 'Suicide Squad' to make a standalone film.
The 44-year-old actor - who only appears on screen in the DC Comics movie for 15 minutes - said: "I think that I brought so much to the table in every scene, it was probably more about filtering all of the insanity, because I wanted to give a lot of options, and I think there's probably enough footage in this film for a Joker movie."
Although Margot enjoyed watching everything Leto did as the supervillain she insists any scenes that were cut in director David Ayer's edit were done so to make the movie more coherent.
Speaking to Tiny Talk, she explained: "There was so much of our back story ... they probably realised that the emotional through-line of the story had to be the mission we were on, and kind of explaining The Enchantress' position and all that kind of stuff, and the back story stuff - though it's like magic ... there's a lot but it just didn't make sense to confuse the present storyline with that."
It's no wonder that Robbie is keen to return to the role as she believes it was a one-in-a-kind opportunity to play Harley - who has always been The Joker's abused girlfriend in the comic books.
The Australian actress gushed: "I feel like I hit the lottery ... The chicks never get these roles - we never get the roles where we have the funny one-liners and then the kick-ass action scene, but then also, like, an intricate character with an awesome story arc - you just don't really get that, like in a big-budget film."
One possibility for Harley and Joker to be reunited on screen could be to fight Ben Affleck's Batman - who also appears in 'Suicide Squad' - in the forthcoming standalone Dark Knight movie, and that's something Leto is really interested in.
He previously said: "I hope this is just an introduction [of the Joker] ... and not the end! Because I could easily just play the Joker a couple more times and then retire. Because it's so fulfilling and so creative and it's so imaginative. It's really difficult to think about doing anything else!
"I think it would be incredible to see Batman and the Joker go head-to-head! This Batman and this Joker. I mean, I don't know, that might be too much! But that would be fun."
