Marc Webb has revealed that he will not be in the director's chair for the fourth instalment of The Amazing Spider Man franchise.

The Amazing Spider Man 2 has not yet hit the big screen, but Sony Pictures are already planning for a further two movies.

And while Webb is back for The Amazing Spider Man 2 and a third film, he will bow out after the 2016 instalment.

Speaking to The Daily Beast, the director said: "I'd like to be involved as a consultant. I've already talked to these guys about it, but in terms of directing it, ['Amazing Spider-Man 3'] will close out my tenure.

"I've had so much fun doing it, but after the third movie, it'll be the time to find something else."

The Amazing Spider Man 2 will come two years after Webb rebooted the popular franchise, and will see him reunite with Andrew Garfield.

Garfield is back in the title role of Peter Parker, alongside Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx.

Last year, Sony announced ambitious plans to release two more 'Spider-Man' films in 2016 and 2018, as well as expand the franchise with two spin-off movies, 'The Sinister Six' and 'Venom', which will concentrate on the web-slinging hero's most famous foes.

The Amazing Spider Man 2 is released 18th April.
