Marc Webb has admitted that Sony announcing a fourth film in The Amazing Spider Man series was a bit of a surprise.
The director will be back next summer for The Amazing Spider Man 2, and he reveals that a trilogy of films was something that was always on the cards.
And while the announcement of a fourth film was a bit of a shock for the director he said that the story could be expanded further.
Speaking to Movies.com he said: "The fourth one was a little bit of a surprise.
"We always talked about there being a set of three movies, but there may be elements that expand outside Spider-Man that could fulfil that fourth film"
Filming has just finished on The Amazing Spider Man 2, a movie that sees Andrew Garfield reprise the role of Peter Parker.
Emma Stone, Sally Field and Martin Sheen are also some of the other familiar faces that will be returning.
But there are also some new names on the cast list as Jamie Foxx, Felicity Jones, Paul Giamatti and Dane DeHaan are all on board.
The Amazing Spider Man 2 is released 18th April 2014.
