The 31-year-old Cleveland Cavaliers forward is star is set to follow in the footsteps of court legend Michael Jordan - who appeared in the original 1996 movie - and team up with Bugs Bunny and the rest of the 'Looney Tunes' cartoon characters to play a game of basketball in order to save them from enslavement at an alien amusement park.

LeBron recently swapped the basketball court for the big screen when he filmed a cameo role for Amy Schumer's comedy flick 'Trainwreck'.

'Space Jam 2' has been "in the works" for some time and rumours LeBron would star intensified when his company SpringHill Entertainment signed a deal with Warner Bros.

Director Justin Lin - who worked on 'Fast & Furious 6' and is currently shooting upcoming sci-fi sequel 'Star Trek Beyond' which hits cinemas on July 22 - is helming the project and will produce via his Perfect Storm Entertainment company.

Lin has teamed up to co-write the sequel with Andrew Dodge and Alfredo Botello.

Lin and Dodge are no strangers to working together; they have already teamed up on an as-yet unnamed cop comedy, and Dodge is writing a TV drama for HBO that is being produced by Lin and Jeremy Renner.

Despite being critically panned, the first 'Space Jam' film earned $230.4 million at the box office worldwide.
