Kevin Feige says that they were under pressure when casting the role of Captain Marvel as it had to 'meet the bar' of those who had been cast in the past.

It was announced over the weekend that Brie Larson had landed the role of Carol Danvers for Marvel's first solo female superhero movie.

Larson has been linked to the role for quite some time and was believed to be the favourite. Now the Oscar-winner is joining the ever-expanding MCU.

And Feige says that they set the casting bar high with Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, and have to match that with every major role that they cast.

Speaking to Cinemablend, Feige said: "Listen, we set the bar very high with the first casting decision we ever made with Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Since then, every single choice we've made, we have asked, 'Could it meet that bar?' Because that is what people expect of us, and that is what... it's a very high bar.

"Carol Danvers needs to be as rich and textured and real as the best of our characters. Maybe even more so. And we got very lucky that Brie - who has all of those attributes, and an Academy Award now - was still very interested in signing up and joining us to bring this character to life."

The Captain Marvel solo film will not hit the big screen until 2019 but it is still unclear if we will see this character introduced before then - possibly in the upcoming Avengers double bill. There is still no word on who will direct the Captain Marvel solo film.

2016 has already been a hugely successful year for Larson with the critically acclaimed Room, which saw her win her first Best Actress Oscar for her central performance.

She will tackle the big budget blockbuster for the first time next year with Kong: Skull Island, which was at Comic-Con over the weekend.

Larson has also completed work on Basmati Blue and Free Fire and is currently filming The Glass Castle, which sees her reunite with Short Term 12 filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton.
