Kate Winslet says she enjoys playing ordinary characters more than taking on glamorous roles.
Winslet prefers roles in which she can be natural looking or even dressed down because she hates sitting in the make-up chair for hours before shooting.
The Oscar winning actress says she also finds it easier to focus on her lines and the story she is trying to convey if she isn't preoccupied with looking perfect all the time on set.
Speaking to Glamour magazine she said: "I've always preferred playing characters who aren't supposed to look beautiful. I love saying, 'Don't make me look nice,' or, 'Make my face look rounder.'
"It's less to think about if my look is raw and it means less being fiddled with by make-up artists. That way, I get the best of both worlds - that side of it for my job and the dressing up bit for the red carpet."
Winslet is back on the big screen next month with her new drama Labor Day; a movie that sees her team up with director Jason Reitman and actor Josh Brolin.
It will be the first movie role for Winslet since she appeared in comedy Movie 43 at the beginning of 2013. Winslet’s work in Labor Day has also been recognised as she picked up a Best Actress - Drama Golden Globe nomination.
She has also completed work on A Little Chaos and is set to take on the role of Jeanine Matthews in the big screen adaptation of Divergent.
