Kate Winslet is back this week with new film Triple 9 and she reveals it was one of the rare occasions when she couldn't identify with her character at all.

Winslet is set to take on the role of Irina Vlaslov, a Russian-Israeli mafia doll and one of the film's villains - a role that we don't usually see the Oscar-winner tackle.

And while this film and role was a departure for Winslet, she admits that she couldn't identify or empathise with her character.

Speaking at the UK press conference earlier this week, the actress said: "It was one of those very rare situations for me, as an actor, where I couldn't identify with any of this woman at all. You know, I couldn't empathise, I couldn't make peace with anything that she did and said.

"I certainly couldn't empathise with anything she wore or her hair. But it was fun, it was really fun to do something so different; it was fun to wear those terrible costumes and to have that huge wig and hairdo."

Triple 9 sees Winslet work with filmmaker John Hillcoat for the first time and Teresa Palmer, Gal Gadot, Aaron Paul, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, and Chiwetel Ejiofor

2016 has already been a successful year for Winslet as she picked up a Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe last month for her performance in Steve Jobs.

She has also picked up nominations at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Baftas, and Oscars, which are only a fortnight away.

Winslet is nominated alongside Rooney Mara (Carol), Rachel McAdams (Spotlight), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), and Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) in what is one of the most wide open categories at this year's Oscars.

Triple 9 is released 19th February.
