This past week brings us some intriguing news, from Andrew Garfield’s and Jessica Chastain’s new movie together, to news of a different kind of Lord of the Rings story.
Check out all of that and more below, in our June 12 Movie News Roundup!
James Wan has revealed the title of Aquaman 2
Director James Wan, known for directing movies from both the Saw franchise and The Conjuring universe, has breached the world of horror and lent his skills to the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) once again.
Wan directed the 2018 film Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa and Nicole Kidman. Now, he’s back in the director’s chair and has told the world what the title will be the for Atlantian’s next adventure; the new film will be titled Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
While little is known about the plot, we do know that production meetings are taking place, so the ball is definitely rolling! Wan has stated that this movie will have a more serious atmosphere, which seems to follow his directing style.
The feature is rumoured to begin shooting next month (July 2021) in Hawaii, with Jason Momoa back in the titular role, along with Patrick Wilson and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II reprising their roles.
We are expecting to see Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom on December 16th, 2022.
Lord of the Rings is getting an anime-style prequel
The Lord of the Rings franchise seems to be kicking up a fuss lately, what with the Amazon TV show on the way, and now a new prequel set 250 years before the main trilogy; and in anime style, no less.
A new stand-alone movie titled The Lord of the Rings: The War of The Rohirrim is in development, with experienced anime director Kenji Kamiyama at the helm of the project. The film is set to focus on the fortress of Helms Deep and its bloody history.
There is said to be no link between this movie and the Amazon series. Peter Jackson also does not have a hand in this feature, but efforts will be made in order to create something that can at least coincide with Jackson’s incredible trilogy, which was of course based on the original novels.
Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield star in The Eyes of Tammy Faye
Michael Showalter is taking the reins for this movie starring former Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield, and IT: Chapter 2 star Jessica Chastain.
The Eyes of Tammy Faye is based on a true story, and will focus on the life of Tammy Faye Bakker, a famous televangelist. Tammy Faye and her husband, Jim, rose to fame in the 70s and 80s as they created one of the world’s largest religious theme parks and broadcasting network.
Their dream didn’t seem to last long as financial issues, cruel rivals and scandals tore their perfect life apart.
While there is no release date for the UK yet, the US can expect to see this drama on September 17th, 2021.
She-Hulk series adds Jameela Jamil
Marvel series She-Hulk has been filming for a while, but Jameela Jamil has only just snagged the role of Titania.
As we already know, Tatiana Maslany will be playing the titular role of She-Hulk, aka the lawyer Jennifer Walters, who is also Bruce Banner’s cousin.
In the comics, Jamil’s character is a broken and bullied woman; someone who is weak and seems to have had a lot taken away from her. She is then offered the prospect of power by Doctor Doom. This character is, however, still to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), so Titania’s origin story will most likely be changed somehow, unless Disney and Marvel Studios are looking to do a surprise reveal.
The comics suggest Titania accepts Doom’s offer and gains superhuman strength and stamina, becoming an opposing character for Walters.
There is no set release date for the series as of yet, but we have high hopes that the show will grace Disney+ next year (2022).
John Wick 4 adds Bill Skarsgård
Bill Skarsgård is well-known at the moment due to his terrifying portrayal of the killer clown Pennywise in IT and IT: Chapter 2, as well as his short role in Deadpool 2. Now however, it seems that he’s stepping away from the red balloons and into the world of John Wick.
While the plot for John Wick 4 hasn’t been revealed to us yet, we can definitely make the bet that there will be more ass-kicking action for Keanu Reeves’ titular assassin. Skarsgård's role has little information surrounding it but, once the film gains more momentum, we may find out what he’s up to. Donnie Yen is also starring as an old friend of Wick’s.
Filming is said to begin this summer (2021), in places like France, Germany, and Japan; this leads us to wonder... what has Mr Wick got himself into this time?
