Moore has been the favourite to scoop the award for her performance in Still Alice for weeks, and she did exactly that in Los Angeles last night.

This is the fifth Oscar nomination of Moore's career - she has had two Best Actress and two Supporting Actress nods in the past - but this is the first time since has won.

An emotional Moore picked up her award from Matthew McConaughey and was visibly emotional about her triumph. As well as joking during her speech, she spoke out in support of those living with Alzheimer's.

Speaking on stage as she collected her award, the actress said: "I read an article that said that winning an Oscar could lead to living five years longer. If that's true, I'd really like to thank the Academy because my husband is younger than me.

"So many people with this disease feel isolated and marginalised, and one of the wonderful things about movies is they make us feel seen, and not alone."

Moore took on the role of a woman suffering with early onset Alzheimer's Disease, as she teamed up with directors Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland for the first time.

While Moore was the favourite to win last night, she was in a tough category as Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Reese Witherspoon (Wild), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), and Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night) were also nominated.

Moore will next be seen in Seventh Son, before returning to the role of President Alma Coin in The Hunger Game: Mockingjay - Part 2.
