Judianna Makovsky says the Russo brothers were looking for a 'darker' suit for Captain America in The Winter Soldier.
Costume designer Makovsky has worked on a range of movies during her career, but Captain America: The Winter Soldier marked the first time that she has worked on a Marvel film.
Makovsky reveals that she worked closely with the Russo brothers to design the suit for the new world in which Steve Rodgers now finds himself in.
"I had meetings with them and with Marvel about their concepts for this film and I learnt that it was a little darker and more reality based (than the previous film), so we started with that. They definitely wanted a new, darker, suit for this new world they were creating.
"The Russos had already worked with Marvel before I started; they had some images from the Ultimate comic book series and knew they wanted to go in that direction.
"Their vision is that S.H.I.E.L.D headquarters are in Washington DC and if everyone in S.H.I.E.L.D walked around outside, then people wouldn’t look twice at them; their uniforms should be like normal clothes that people actually wear.
"So that was where we started and tried to make the Captain America 'stealth suit' fit in with that world."
Makovsky is no stranger to the blockbuster film, having worked on the likes of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and The Hunger Games during her stellar career.
Captain America: The Winter Solider was a box office smash and has so far grossed $714 million worldwide: making it the fourth most successful film of the year so far.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is available now on Disney 3D Blu-ray™, DVD and Blu-ray™.
