Judi Dench said she did feel a responsibility when she took on the role of Philomena Lee in new film Philomena.
Dench takes on the title role in the new film as she teams up with Steve Coogan and reunites with director Stephen Frears.
And the scar winner felt that it was important to remain true to the story and not sell this woman short.
Speaking at the London Film festival press conference the actress said: “That is really the only thing that concerns me when I am playing somebody who is alive… I played Iris Murdoch not long after she had died, and felt the responsibility very heavily on my shoulders.
“I feel with this film, long as we tell Philomena’s story and we are true – which Jeff and Steve have already done by writing the story – we must not sell her short. She is a remarkable woman and I felt that we had to have absolute truth in the story.”
Dench’s central performance has been winning rave reviews on the festival circuit in recent weeks – she is also a major favourite to pick up a Best Actress Oscar nomination.
Philomena I the first big screen outing For Dench since the box office success of Skyfall this time last year.
The movie follows Philomena Lee on her quest to find the son she was forced to give up fifty years ago. Coogan takes on the role of Martin Sixsmith, the journalist who helps her in her search.
Philomena is released 1st November.
