Joss Whedon says that events of Captain America: The Winter Solider will have an impact on The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Whedon will be back in the directors's chair for the second Avengers film, which will be hitting the big screen in 2015.
And while all the movies do link in and affect each other, Whedon says he doesn't make the presumption that audience members have seen all the film.
Speaking to AlloCine.fr, the director said: "The events of Captain America [The Winter Soldier] will definitely affect the world of Avengers 2. But at the end of the day, I have to make my movie assuming that people will only have seen the first one, or possibly not even seen the first one.
"I can’t assume that everybody went to see Thor [The Dark World], Captain America, and Iron Man 3 in-between. I have to go from one movie to the next and be true to what’s happened [in the previous movies], but not be slavish to it. [...]
"The model I’m always trying to build from, or my guiding star, is The Godfather: Part II where a ton has happened in-between and it’s a very different movie [from Part I], but you don’t need any information."
Filming on The Avengers: Age of Ultron is set to get underway this year, with Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner all reprising their roles.
However, there are some new faces as James Spader is set to play Ultron, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen are also on board as Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron is released 1st May 2015.
