Joss Whedon says that he had thought about what he would do if there was a second movie before he has worked out the plot for the first.
Whedon is currently working on the script for the highly anticipated Avengers 2, which will begin filming next year.
And while Whedon admits that he had not idea if there would be a sequel he knew where he was going to take the story if he got a second chance.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight the director said: "I didn't think I was gonna do the second one, but I had an idea for it before I had figured out the first one.
"You go into a movie not assuming that there's going to be [a sequel]. I did sort of know, if they were to come back, I know what's going to happen and it's going to be awful!"
As well as penning the script Whedon will be back in the director's chair for the film - however it has not been announced who we will be seeing return or indeed who the new additions may be.
Avengers 2 will bring to a close Phase 2 of Marvel movies, which includes Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Avengers Assemble was a box office smash last summer as it grossed in excess of $1.5 billion to become the third biggest grossing movie of all time.
Avengers 2 has a 1st May 2015 release date.
