Josh Trank says he was not interested in making a 'cartoonish' Fantastic Four with his new movie.
The Fantastic Four is set to return to the big screen this summer with Trank in the director's chair - this will be his first film since he made his debut with Chronicle back in 2012.
And the director reveals that he was interested in copying what had gone before, instead, he wanted to make that was 'challenging,' 'tragic' and 'dramatic'.
Speaking to Empire, the director said: "The original two films to me are very similar to a lot of recent movies that have come out, in terms of that kind of cartoonish. It's just not something that me and Simon are interested in as storytellers.
He continued: "There's the opportunity to make something that is challenging and tragic and dramatic. The opportunity is right there in the material. We'd rather steer it in that direction as opposed to just embracing a tone that comes right off the page."
We have been treated to the first images from Fantastic Four this week, which featured Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B Jordan, and Jamie Bell as Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm.
Fantastic Four is the biggest film of Trank's directing career to date and sees him team up with Simon Kinberg and Jeremy Slater, who have penned the screenplay.
