Joseph Gordon-Levitt says that Sandman will be a 'spectacular action film' but will avoid all of the 'ordinary cliches'.
Gordon-Levitt has been attached to the project for some time and may star in as well as being in the director's chair. He has also been working on with David Goyer on the screenplay.
The movie is based on the series of comic books by Neil Gaiman and is already a highly anticipated film project.
Gordon-Levitt gave a little update on the movie and said that it will avoid the cliches that so many comic book movies often fall in to.
Speaking to MTV, the actor said: "It's going to be like a grand spectacular action film, but that relies on none of those same old ordinary cliches. So, that's why it's taking a lot time to write, but it's going to be really good."
Gordon-Levitt has revealed that the script writing process is well underway but the complicated nature of the source material had made it a 'slow but steady' process.
He continued: "It's slow but steady. It's a really complicated adaptation because those comics, they're brilliant. But they're not written as a whole.
"It's not like 'Watchmen', which is a graphic novel that has a beginning, middle, and end. 'Sandman' was written over the course of whatever - I forget exactly, six or seven years.
"One at a time. One little 20-page issue at a time. And to try to take that and make it into something that's a feature film - a movie that has a beginning, middle, and end - is complicated."
Gordon-Levitt made his feature film directorial debut back in 2013 with Don Jon and this would be his first directorial outing since making that debut.
We are going to be seeing plenty of Gordon-Levitt on the big screen later this year with The Walk and Snowden on the horizon - both of which are being tipped as possible Oscar contenders.
