Depp is set to reprise the role of the Mad Hatter and play him for the second time; the first time since the success of Alice in Wonderland back in 2010.

The movie sees the Oscar-nominated actor reunite with Mia Wasikowska - who is reprising the role of Alice - and team up with director James Bobin for the first time.

Speaking at the European premiere of Alice Through The Looking Glass, the actor said he was thrilled to return to this character. He said: "It felt great. They are characters that you get to know and you get to know for long periods of time - maybe six months - and when it ends it is like a horrible goodbye to this thing that you have been.

"To be able to come back, to be able to work with Mia again, to be able to work with James Bobin - who took Tim's work and made this wonderful collaboration of their work together and made it his own. I felt lucky to be there."

Alice Through The Looking Glass does delve a little deeper into the character of the Mad Hatter and Depp was exciting about exploring this character further.

He continued: "It was great to have the opportunity to see other layers and sub-layers of the Hatter and see him so lost and gone that he fading into death and nothingness."

Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, and Michael Sheen are some of the other familiar faces on board, as they reprise the roles of the White Queen, the Red Queen, and the White Rabbit.

Rhys Ifans and Sacha Baron Cohen are the two big additions as they take on the roles of Zanik Hightopp and Time for the first time.

This is the first big screen outing of the year for Depp, who has also completed work on London Fields and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Alice Through The Looking Glass is released 27th May.
