Johnny Depp says he wasn't considered 'blockbuster material' until he took on the role of Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
The actor will be back on the big screen this summer as he takes on the role of Tonto in The Lone Ranger - a film which reunites him with director Gore Verbinski.
And while Depp may been starring in plenty of blockbuster pictures now he says that that was not always the case.
Speaking to the Press Association the actor said: "The films that I did prior to Pirates ... not everything but a lot of it, was sort of by industry standards, not blockbuster stuff. So I wasn't ever blockbuster material.
"I've been lucky enough to be involved in some very small and different independent films throughout my career and I've been able to be involved in, you know, a couple of films that shocked everybody, especially me."
The Oscar nominated actor will take on the role of Tonto alongside Armie Hammer, who is set to take on the title role of the Lone Ranger.
This is the first time that we have seen Depp on the big screen since Dark Shadows last year.
But he is set to return to the role that made him a blockbuster star as a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie is in the pipeline.
The movie is set for 2015 release and sees Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg in the director's chair.
The Lone Ranger is released 9th August.
