Goodman, has boarded the cast of the movie named after the historical holiday on which the terrorist attack took place in April 2013, and will play the role of Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis, who worked with various law enforcement agencies to track, identify and apprehend the suspected bombers.

Mark Wahlberg - who was born in Boston, Massachusetts - is producing the movie and was also said to be keen to play the role of Ed, who has provided a first-hand account of the dramatic day when three people died and 264 others were injured.

Oscar winner J.K. Simmons will portray Watertown Police Sergeant Jeffrey Puglies, and Jimmy O. Yang - who stars in HBO series 'Silicon Valley' - will play Dun Meng, who was carjacked and held captive for 90 minutes before escaping.

The movie is being directed by Peter Berg and the filmmaker is thrilled to have Goodman on board because the legendary actor will bring "gravitas" to the role.

He said: "Commissioner Davis is an American hero, and John Goodman brings the extraordinary combination of humility, gravitas and empathy to portray him."

'Patriots Day' isn't the only film to tell the story of the event. Fox is currently working on a Boston Marathon-related movie of its own, with Casey Affleck set to produce and star in the film.
