Joel Kinnaman has revealed that it was the involvement of director Jose Padilha in RoboCop that interested him in the film.

Kinnaman is set to take on the lead role of Alex Murphy aka RoboCop in the big screen adaptation of the popular eighties film.

RoboCop is set to be the biggest role and film of Kinnaman's career so far, but it is a film that he almost didn't get involved with.

Speaking to SFX Magazine the actor said: "When I first heard there was gonna be a RoboCop remake, I thought, ‘Maybe I’ll see that somewhere down the line.

"But it’s nothing I’m interested in pursuing myself.’ Then when I heard it was José Padilha that was gonna direct it, I became very interested.

"José has fought very hard and succeeded in making something that has a point of view, and a political and philosophical perspective."

Padilha has enjoyed huge success in recent years with Elite Squad and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within, but RoboCop is his first blockbuster film as well as his first English speaking project.

As for Kinnaman, 2014 is set to be a big year for the actor as he is also set to star in Child 44 with Tom Hardy and Knight of Cups; which is a new film from director Terence Malick.

RoboCop is released 7th February 2014.
