Joe Russo has revealed that he was excited about dividing the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War ahead of Avengers: Infinity War.
Anthony and Joe Russo returned to the director's chair earlier this year with Civil War, which saw our favourite heroes going head to head and on different sides.
The Russo brothers will take over the Avengers director's chair from Joss Whedon for the first time with Infinity War, which will start filming at the beginning of next year.
And Joe admits in an interview with IGN, that it is going to be difficult for these heroes to come together to fight off a new foe.
He said: "Part of what excited us about how we could end Civil War, and the fact that there is this divide between Cap and Tony and their relationship that will be very, very difficult for them to ever repair, the fact that the Avengers are divided in two and half of them are now wanted by the law and the other fact are not too comfortable with their fate moving forward, and the fact that Thanos and the Infinity War are coming - the greatest threat the universe has ever seen is going to come at the moment where the Avengers are arguably at their lowest, at their worst, at their least strong and most divided since they've been formed - that for us was a very exciting place for us to be as storytellers because of the vulnerable nature of our heroes in that kind of a situation.
"For us, as we move forward into Infinity War, the condition of the Avengers is very much an important part of how that story starts and what dangers they face moving forward."
The cast list for Avengers: Infinity War has not yet been announced but the excitement around the two movies is already starting to grow.
The Russo's have already steered Captain America: The Winter Solider and Captain America: Civil War to both critical and commercial success; the latter has grossed over $1 billion at the box office and is the most successful Captain America movie to date.
The first of the Russo directed Avengers films - which will be called Infinity War - will be released in 2018. The second film - which will be given a different title - will follow a year later.
However, before we see those movies released, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther will all hit the big screen.
Avengers: Infinity War is released 27th April 2018.
