Joaquin Phoenix is rumoured to have been approached to take on the role of Lex Luthor.
Phoenix has picked up Oscar nominations for performances in the likes of Gladiator and Walk The Line, but now he could be heading for the big budget blockbuster if sources are to be believed.
A source told Variety that the actor could well be offered the role of Luthor for Superman vs Batman.
Batman vs Superman is set to be the sequel to this summer's Man of Steel, and would see the character of Luthor appear for the first time in the reboot.
Zac Snyder is back in the director's chair for the film, while Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck are already on board as Superman and Batman.
Kevin Spacey was the last actor to play this role on the big screen; Gene Hackman has also famously taken on the role.
It was reported earlier this year that Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston had been cast in the role - however, those reports turned out to be false.
Batman vs Superman is set for a 2015 release.
