The 69-year-old comic has worked behind the scenes on a number of projects over the years but the Netflix comedy marks his first feature and he admitted the budget for the film, as well as a star-studded cast that included the likes of Hugh Grant, Christian Slater and Melissa McCarthy, presented more challenges than he realised.

He told Empire magazine: “Directing is really just telling people what to do, but it was a little more difficult than I expected because there’s a lot of money involved.

“And people in the film world tend to be bigger personalities to deal with.”

And Jerry also had to tackle some unrest amongst the crew.

He admitted: “We had a blow-up on the set. Somebody in the set department started screaming at somebody else.

“I said, ‘Everyone just stop. This is a Pop-Tart movie. None of this matters.’ “

Jerry – who also plays a Kellogg’s executive in the film – cast the film during lockdown by calling friends he thought might want to get involved, and he was particularly thrilled to get Hugh on board.

He said: “Everybody I asked said ‘yes’ so we ended up with this crazy cast.”

Of Hugh’s portrayal of a frustrated failed Shakespearean actor who agrees to play Tony the Tiger in Frosties commercials to pay the bills, he added: “That was the greatest part of the whole thing, honestly. Because I am a crazy fan of his.

“He asked me if it matters that Tony the Tiger has a British accent.

“I told him, ‘No, who cares?’ “
