Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club
Jean-Marc Vallee says he was not sure about Matthew McConaughey for the central role of Dallas Buyers Club.
Vallee is returning to the director’s chair with this new film - which is based on the true story of AIDS sufferer Ron Woodroof.
And while Valle had his reservations about initially casting McConaughey, but all that was changed when he met the actor.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter the director said: "I wasn't sure about Matthew at first. Mr The Most Handsome Man with Muscles?
"Then I met him and found a man who really wanted to change perceptions and have new challenges in his career."
And Vallee’s decision to cast McConaughey has been a good one as his performance has already been heavily praised; in fact he is already being tipped as a possible Best Actor Oscar contender.
Over the last few years McConaughey has established himself as a Hollywood heavyweight with fantastic turns on the likes of The Lincoln Lawyer, Killer Joe, Magic Mike and Mud; he really has left his ‘Mr The Most Handsome Man with Muscles’ image behind.
McConaughey lost an astonishing fifty pound to take on the role of Woodroof alongside Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner.
Dallas Buyers Club is released 7th February 2014.
