James Cameron says that is 'doing another pass' of the Avatar scripts at the moment.
Avatar is one of the most eagerly awaited sequels in movie history... but we have been waiting since 2009 and the $2 billion success of the first film.
And while the release of the movie may still be some time off, Cameron says that the characters and the film's setting is now pretty much sorted.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the writer and director said: "I'm in the process of doing another pass through all three scripts right now. Just refining. That's in parallel with the design process. The design process is very mature at this point.
"We've been designing for about a year and a half. All the characters, settings and creatures are all pretty much (set)."
Avatar 2 is set for a December 2017 release and Cameron is only to aware of the pressure and expectation of this film and the sequels that follow. He admits that they really have to deliver.
He continued: "Obviously, expectations are going to be very high on these films," he said. "Especially on Avatar 2, to make sure it wasn't just some big fluke the first time. So we've got to deliver."
Avatar 2 will be the first directorial outing for Cameron since the massive success of the first movie.
Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington are set to reprise the central roles of Neytiri and Jake Sully, while Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver have also been linked to the film.
Avatar 2 is set to hit the big screen in the UK on 25th December 2017.
