Jake Gyllenhaal says he looks for a darkness and complicated love in his roles.
The actor is back on the big screen today as he teams up with Hugh Jackman for the hard-hitting Prisoners.
Gyllenhaal takes on the role of Detective Loki in the thriller, a man who is leading the hunt for two abducted girls.
And Gyllenhaal admits that he found the character of Loki difficult to let go of.
Speaking on UK daytime show 'Lorraine' the actor said: "I look for something in the story that offers love in a more complicated way.
"I don't look for darkness, whatever that means, but in my mind, darkness acknowledges great light too.
"I think when it comes to a character, I'm moved by folk that I might struggle to love at first; characters that I have to do enough research on and think enough about to be able to really fall in love with them.
"Recently, in particular, that's what's been happening. I love Detective Loki. I found it hard to let him go."
Gyllenhaal has tackled some interesting characters over the years, and this is his first big screen outing since End of Watch late last year.
And the actor will be reuniting with Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve next year for a second project Enemy; a movie that is already doing well on the festival circuit.
