Jake Gyllenhaal has described co-star Hugh Jackman as 'extraordinary' in their new film Prisoners.

Gyllenhaal and Jackman team up for the first time in the crime thriller; a movie that has been winning over audiences and critics on the festival circuit.

Jackman plays the father of an abducted girl, while Gyllenhaal plays the detective leading the hunt to find her.

And Gyllenhaal has nothing but nice things to say about his co-star and his performance.

Speaking to Flicks and Bits the actor said: "He is a ridiculously good man, it's annoying," Gyllenhaal teased, adding: "He sings, he dances, he saves children... the guy is just... it's frustrating."

The actor added more seriously: "For me what was fascinating was that I had met him before and he was so nice, so I thought, 'What was going on, what can we get at?' And what I found was this incredible vulnerability, and his strength comes from an engine of vulnerability.

"He is a man that I admire because he is not afraid to show that, and I think what is underneath is what you see in this performance. In this performance is a man who's struggling deeply.

"The truth of who he is comes out in so many ways and in some extraordinary scenes. He's extraordinary in Prisoners."

The central performances of both Gyllenhaal and Jackman are being tipped as possible Oscar contenders in a movie that is set to be one of the most powerful of the autumn.

Gyllenhaal and Jackman are joined by an all star cast as Viola Davis, Terrence Howard, Maria Bello, Melissa Leo and Paul Dano also star.

Prisoners is released 27th September.
