Interstellar has toppled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from the top of the UK box office as it has snatched that #1 spot in its opening weekend.

Interstellar marks the return of Christopher Nolan to the director’s chair for the first time since The Dark Knight Rises, in what is one of the most anticipated movies of 2014. The film may have just missed out on the top spot in the US, but it comfortably saw off all the competition here in the UK this weekend.

The movie took o£5.3 million as film fans flocked to see the movie that has all of the critics raving. The film sees Matthew McConaughey return to the big screen, while Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain also star.

Mr Turner was up five places this week as it jumped from seven to two. Mr Turner is the biopic about the painter and sees Timothy Spall take on the title role - his performance is being tipped as a possible Best Actor Oscar contender.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fell two places this week to three, while there was no move for Gone Girl at four. Fury rounded off the top five as the Brad Pitt movie dropped two places this week,

The Book of Life was down one at six, while Ouija - which topped the box office in the US - was this week’s biggest faller dropping five places from two to seven. Nighcrawler is another film that has had the critics in a spin, but it dropped just two places this week from six to eight.

The Maze Runner was down one at nine, while Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day was also down one as it rounded off the top ten.
