It was back in 1996 when Independence Day hit the big screen... and now, twenty years later, the sequel is finally on the horizon.

Independence Day: Resurgence

Independence Day: Resurgence

Independence Day: Resurgence is set to be one of the blockbusters not to miss this summer as Roland Emmerich returns to the director's chair.

We were treated to a new teaser trailer at the Super Bowl over the weekend, and now we have a new poster to take a look at.

Since the success of Independence Day in 1996, Emmerich has brought us movies such as The Day After Tomorrow and 2012 but this will be his first feature since Stonewall.

Jeff Goldblum is set to lead the cast list as he reprises the role of David Levinson while Bill Pullman and Vivica A. Fox are also back as President Whitmore and Jasmine.

However, there are some big new additions to the cast list as Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, Charlotte Gainsbourg, William Fichtner, Sela Ward, Judd Hirsch and Brent Spiner are set to star.

We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defence program to protect the planet.

But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Independence Day: Resurgence is released 24th June.
