Idris Elba

Idris Elba has revealed that should a Luther film go ahead then it would be an origins story.

The British actor has received acclaim for his central performance in the BBc drama - which returns to screens next month - he went on to win a Golden Globe for his performance earlier this year.

The actor says that a film is the goal and will probably based on novel Luther: The Calling.

Speaking to Digital Spy the actor said: "If we do decide to make this film, the spine of the film will probably come from The Calling - which is the book - and that starts at the beginning of who Luther is and where he's come from," said the actor.

"[The movie is] a goal, it's a goal for Neil and I, for sure - we've talked about it at length," he said. "We haven't got into any sort of deal stage or anything like that, but it's certainly a goal.

"We did six episodes [on television], then we did four, then we waited a year and a half and then we did another four. That's training our fans to gear up towards what could be either a film or maybe a television special and then a film."

Not only is Elba having success on the small screen but he also a pile of movies in the pipeline.

He is back this summer as he teams up with director Guillermo del Toro for Pacific Rim.

He has also completed work on Second Coming, Thor: The Dark World, No Good Deed and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, in which he will play Nelson Mandela.

Luther is back for a third series on Tuesday, July 2 on BBC 1
