We last saw McKellen return to the role of Magneto in X-Men: Days of Future Past last year - a movie that went on to enjoy both critical and commercial success.

And while there have been rumours that McKellen will back in the role for the new film - which is currently being shot - the actor has shot down those rumours.

When asked about appearing in X-Men: Apocalypse by Digital Spy, the actor said: "I haven't heard that, I don't think I am, no, no, they are currently making the film and I'm not in it.

"You want to be in movies people want to see, I always thought the 'X Men' stories were superior to my taste, to any other fantasy movies."

And while McKellen has enjoyed appearing in the movies and enjoyed huge success with them over the years, he admits that he doesn't get 'caught up in blockbusters' and has had other movie projects to focus on.

He continued: "I was very happy to be a part of the films but I have other things to be doing.

"I've just done 'Mr. Holmes', I just done some filming for a sitcom, a film for BBC TV with Anthony Hopkins, so there are compensations for not getting caught up in blockbusters."

McKellen will be returning to the big screen this week with Mr Holmes, which sees him take on the role of Sherlock Holmes as he reunites with director Bill Condon for the first time since Gods and Monsters.

The movie is set to focus on Holmes in his later years and McKellen is already winning acclaim for his central performance - he is also being tipped as a possible early Best Actor contender.

The popular actor is also back on the small screen as Freddie Thornhill in Vicious and will be appearing in TV movie The Dresser.

As for X-Men: Apocalypse, Bryan Singer will be back in the director's chair while James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence, Rose Byrne, and Evan Peters are some of the familiar faces on board.

Some of the new names on the cast list include Sophie Turner, Oscar Isaac, Olivia Munn, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Tye Sheridan, and Alexandra Shipp.

Mr Holmes is released 19th June. X-Men: Apocalypse is released 19th May 2016.
