Ian McKellen has revealed that he and Michael Fassbender did not collaborate on how to portray Magneto.
McKellen is set to return to the role of the X-Men villain in X-Men: Days of Future Past; a movie that will also see Fassbender reprise the role.
Fassbender takes on the younger version of the character, and played him for the first time in X-Men: First Class.
The actor said: "I think he [Fassbender] made it clear that he wanted to be his own Magneto, and that suits the nature of the story and his part in it.
"[Director] Bryan Singer clearly doesn't mind that we, Fassbender and I, don't look much like each other, although they have put out a poster where our faces are blended and you do a double take and think, 'Oh my goodness, I didn't know I was that good looking', and then realise the bit that's good looking is not me, but Fassbender!"
It will be the first time that McKellen has taken on the role of Magneto since the success of X-Men: The Last Stand back in 2006. The film will see him reunite with Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry.
McKellen is currently sitting at the top of the UK box office with his latest film The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - a movie that see him return to the role of Gandalf.
X-Men:Days of Future Past is released 22nd May 2014.
