Hugh Jackman says he didn't want to sensationalise the story in Prisoners as he wanted it to be as real as possible.
The Oscar nominated actor is set to play the father of a young girl who is kidnapped along with her best friend.
And Jackman says he felt a responsibility during the shoot to get it as accurate as he could.
Speaking to MTV the actor said: "The more I researched this - I read a lot of stories, I saw a lot of videos of endless parents doing those press conferences. It's happening now. Gosh, the whole Ariel Castro case has just played out in front of us all.
"This stuff goes on. Not that I expect people who have been through this to watch the movie - I felt a responsibility to not sensationalise that story, not just do a classic revenge torture thriller, but actually to delve into the realities of it."
Jackman stars alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Melissa Leo and Terrence Howard, while Denis Villeneuve is in the director's chair.
The movie has already been winning over critics and audiences on the festival circuit and is being tipped as a possible Oscar contender.
Prisoners marks the first time that Jackman and Gyllenhaal have starred together in a film; Gyllenhaal will play the detective leading the case to find the missing girls.
Jackman has already enjoyed big box office success this year with Les Miserables and The Wolverine under his belt.
Prisoners is released 27th September.
