Hugh Jackman believes that X-Men Origins: Wolverine did not succeed in making people understand the character of Wolverine.

This summer sees Jackman return to the role that made his a star for the second stand alone film for this character.

The Wolverine sees him team up with director James Mangold and this time the Oscar nominated actor says he is confident that they have achieved what they set out to do.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly the actor said: "I had something to prove, and we could have done better. Somehow the first Wolverine movie ended up looking like the fourth X-Men - just with different characters.

"I left unsure if we'd achieved our goal, which was to make sure people understood my character."

"Fingers crossed that we've done it this time," he said. "I'm pretty confident we have."

The Wolverine is based on the popular and much loved Japanese arc from the comics in a film that is set after the events of X-Men: The Last Stand.

Jackman will also reprise this character next summer in X-Men: Days of Future Past; the sequel to X-Men: First Class.

The film will see him reunite with director Bryan Singer as the cast list is a mix of actors from First Class as well as franchise favourites.

The Wolverine is released 26th July.
