'Man of Steel' has broken the record for the highest grossing opening weekend in June.

Warner Bros.' Superman movie reboot starring Henry Cavill and directed by Zack Snyder soared at the box office last weekend, taking $125 million upon its release in the United States and $197 million worldwide in just four days.

The film has overtaken Disney's 'Toy Story 3' for the most money made during a typical weekend in the month of June, earning $113.1 million between Friday (14.06.13) and Sunday (16.06.13), which puts it ahead of the $110.3 million grossed by the cartoon flick in 2010.

Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said: "The movie is a perfect blend of a superhero who reaches not only the fanboy audience but the family audience as well, with great results from both."

The superhero caper - which co-stars Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner - has also been incredibly successful around the world, particularly in Cavill's home country, the United Kingdom, where it took $17.1 million over the weekend.

'Man of Steel' has been met with positive reviews from fans and critics alike and Warner Bros. has already tasked writer David S. Goyer with penning a sequel.
