Guillermo del Toro says Pacific Rim 2 is going to be a mix of new and returning characters.
It was announced last month that del Toro was working on the script for Pacific Rim 2 and that the film has been green lit.
The director has teamed up with Zak Penn to write the screenplay, and del Toro has been talking about what we can expect from the sequel.
Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, the director said: "I’m hoping to bring the same idea I had in the first movie, that was to make it multicultural and humanistic as much as possible, to make characters from many nationalities or gender, to make them equal in the scope of the adventure, in the day-to-day of the adventure.
"So, we’re bringing a few characters that are new and hopefully doing good work managing those that survived the first movie."
Pacific Rim hit the big screen back in 2013, and went on to gross in excess of $411 million at the global box office.
Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi are expected to return as Raleigh and Mako, but no announcements about the cast have yet been made.
Pacific Rim 2 will be hitting the big screen in the spring of 2017.
