Guillermo del Toro has hinted that a third Hellboy film is unlikely to go ahead.

Del Toro has teamed up with Ron Perlman for Hellboy and Hellboy: The Golden Army in 2004 and 2008, and the actor had voiced his interest in doing a third.

And while del Toro reveals the idea that he had for a third and final film, the director didn't think that the film was going to go ahead.

Taking part in 'Ask Me Anything' with Reddit, the director said: "Well, you know, we don't have that movie on the horizon, but the idea for it was to have Hellboy finally come to terms with the fact that his destiny, his inevitable destiny, is to become the beast of the Apocalypse, and having him and Liz face... that part of his nature.

"And he has to do it in order to be able to ironically vanquish the foe that he has to face in the third film.

"He has to become the best of the Apocalypse to be able to defend humanity, but at the same time he becomes a much darker being. It's a very interesting ending to the series, but I don't think it will happen."

Del Toro is currently working on the script for a second Pacific Rim film, which is set to hit the big screen in 2017.

The director has also completed work on Crimson Peak with Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Hunnam, and Jessica Chastain. The film is set to hit the big screen in autumn next year.
