Based on the internationally-acclaimed Japanese Manga of the same name, Ghost in the Shell is the upcoming movie from Paramount Pictures following Major; a special ops human-cyborg hybrid who leads an elite task force known as Section 9.
Scarlett Johansson steps into the role of Major in the film, alongside a talented cast and crew – some of which you can see in these two new featurettes released this week, which delve into the world of production and costume design on the movie. Check them out below:
The official synopsis for the film reads: “In the near future, Major (Scarlett Johansson) is the first of her kind: A human saved from a terrible crash, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world’s most dangerous criminals. When terrorism reaches a new level that includes the ability to hack into people’s minds and control them, Major is uniquely qualified to stop it. As she prepares to face a new enemy, Major discovers that she has been lied to: her life was not saved, it was stolen. She will stop at nothing to recover her past, find out who did this to her and stop them before they do it to others.”
‘Beat’ Takeshi Kitano, Michael Carmen Pitt, Pilou Asbaek, Chin Han and Juliette Binoche also star.
Much controversy has hit the movie ahead of release, in particular Johansson and her stepping into a role which was designed for a woman of Asian heritage.
Responding to those criticisms, she said: “I certainly would never presume to play another race of a person. Diversity is important in Hollywood, and I would never want to feel like I was playing a character that was offensive.”
Fans will vote on whether or not the casting was acceptable with their wallets and purses when it comes time for the movie to be officially released. This one could go either way.
Ghost in the Shell comes to UK cinemas on Friday, March 31, 2017.
