George MacKay says he struggled to understand the perspective of the mid-eighties when it came to homosexuality.
MacKay is set to star in new British comedy Pride this autumn, which follows UK gay and lesbian activists who supported the miners during their strike in the eighties.
MacKay takes on the role of Joe - a young man who is yet to tell his parents that he is gay. And there were certain aspects of that period that the actor struggled to get his head around.
Speaking to Total Film, the actor said: "It was the one thing that was difficult to understand; not just the culture of the time, but the perspective.
"I guess I’m taking for granted how open my parents are. I realise in 1984 my parents would not have had a problem with it. And I’ve been brought up around a lot of gay people, so it’s never been something on my radar."
MacKay is part of an all-star cast in Pride, as he is joined by Bill Nighy, Andrew Scott, Dominic Wes, and Imelda Staunton.
Pride is released 12th September.
