Gareth Edwards has been lined up to direct the first Star Wars spin off film.
Filming has just got underway on Star Wars: Episode VII, but plans are already underway for a spin off film that will focus on an individual character.
'Star Wars' creator George Lucas' production company Lucasfilm made the announcement on StarWars.com yesterday (22.05.14), although there was no confirmation as to which character the spin-off would feature.
Edwards will be in the director's chair for the film, while Gary Whitta - who was behind The Book of Eli - will pen the screenplay.
Being a life-long Star Wars fan, the director is thrilled to be on board the project.
He said: "Ever since I saw 'Star Wars' I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the Rebel Alliance!
"I could not be more excited and honoured to go on this mission with Lucasfilm."
Edwards has enjoyed huge success already this year, as his remake of Godzilla has blasted to the top of the U.S. and UK box office.
Godzilla marks only his second feature film, having made his directorial debut with Monsters back in 2010.
This Star Wars spin off film is set to be released in 2016. Star War: Episode VII will hit the big screen in December 2015.
