With Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role, upcoming Warner Bros. Pictures flick Joker looks to be the deepest dive into the psyche of the infamous DC Comics villain that fans have ever seen. Though the character's origins have to this point remained a mystery, they're set to be given some fleshing out in a brand new standalone universe.
Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) is a man consistently bullied for his choices in life. He wants to make people laugh, but instead of chuckling with him, society laughs AT him.
Robert De Niro also stars in the upcoming release, as well as Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Marc Maron and Douglas Hodge.
Director Todd Phillips directs this gritty exploration of the character in what is being described as a "broader cautionary tale", in a screenplay he co-wrote with Scott Silver. Phillips also produces alongside Bradley Cooper under their Joint Effort banner, with Emma Tillinger Koskoff also on board. Walter Hamada, Michael E. Uslan, Aaron L. Gilbert, Joseph Garner, Richard Baratta, and Bruce Berman all serve as executive producers.
Joker is set for release in UK cinemas on October 4, 2019.
