Saldana is set to reprise the role of Uhura in the upcoming film, which is the third movie in the rebooted Star Trek franchise.

The movie sees Saldana reunite with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, and John Cho - they are back as Kirk, Spock, Scotty, Bone, Chekov, and Sulu - and she hints that we meet a tired crew at the beginning of the film.

Speaking to EW about Star Trek Beyond, the actress said: "We're tired, we need time off, we've been working non-stop, and it's become like a machine where you kind of forget about yourself, but you need to go back home and nurture yourself and rest.

"Life has a different journey for us, and instead of us having to go out and aid another population, another planet that has been the target of violence, we are the target, so this is very different. We are tested at the craziest level and not just our lives are tested, but our characters and our relationships are tested."

There are plenty of familiar faces on the cast list but it is all change in the director's chair as Justin Lin takes over from J.J. Abrams at the helm of this franchise for the first time.

Star Trek Beyond is the first feature film for Lin since the success of Fast & Furious 6 back in 2013. It will be interesting to see in which direction he takes this franchise.

2016 has already been a busy year for Saldana as she is currently filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, which will see her reprise the role of Gamora.

She has also completed work on Live by Night, which is the latest directorial offering from Ben Affleck. Affleck and Saldana will also star alongside Elle Fanning, Sienna Miller, Anthony Michael Hall, Brendan Gleeson, and Chris Cooper.

Star Trek Beyond is released 22nd July.
