The 50-year-old filmmaker is set to helm the new take on the 1968 cult classic that will star Sydney Sweeney in the title role – a part that was played by Jane Fonda in the original flick.

Edgar, whose previous movies include 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Last Night in Soho', has been interested in the picture for some time and held a meeting with Sydney after it was first announced in 2022. However, he was only committed to working on the project if he was able to get behind the camera.

Jane Goldman and her daughter Honey Ross are also in negotiations to pen the script – with the former writing for successful franchises including 'X-Men' and the 'Kingsman' spy series.

Little is known about the new movie, but the original film was directed by Roger Vadim and followed an astronaut from the 41st century who had to stop an evil scientist named Durand Durand.

Jane previously confessed that she was "worried" about the remake as she is uncertain as to how the film will turn out.

The 86-year-old actress told The Hollywood Reporter: "I try not to. Because I worry about what it's going to be.

"I had an idea of how to do it that [original producer] Dino De Laurentiis, when he was still alive, wouldn't listen to.

"But it could have been a truly feminist movie."

Meanwhile, Sydney brushed off the failure of her superhero flick 'Madame Web' earlier this year as it has instead enabled her to build a relationship with Sony.

She told British GQ: "To me, that film was a building block. It's what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony. Without doing 'Madame Web', I wouldn't have a relationship with the decision-makers over there.

"Everything in my career I do not just for that story, but strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell 'Anyone But You'. I was able to get 'Barbarella'."
