Domhnall Gleeson has revealed that he had not seen the original Star Wars movies until he landed the role in Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens.

Gleeson is one of the new faces on The Force Awakens cast list - which will see him team up with director J.J. Abrams for the first time - and he had to go back and watch the original movies. He admits that he had seen the prequels and had not been a huge fan of the franchise.

Speaking to the MailOnline, the actor said: "I did like Star Wars when I was a kid, I saw the prequels first, I didn't see the full original films first all the way through. So I went back and watched them all on a big screen after I got cast, and that made me incredibly excited about it. I loved every second."

It has not yet been revealed which character Gleeson will be playing in the highly anticipated new film, but he is set to star alongside other new faces Andy Serkis, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, and Lupita N’Yong’o. Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher will also be reprising their roles of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia.

Filming on The Force Awakens has wrapped - however, Abrams is keeping much about the project a secret - but we are going to have to wait until December until the film hits the big screen.

As for Gleeson, he returns to cinema screens this week with sci-fi film Ex Machina - a movie that sees him team up with Isaac and Alicia Vikander. The movie sees Gleeson team up with director Alex Garland, who is making his feature film directorial debut with the project.

We are also going to be seeing Gleeson in Brooklyn and he is currently filming The Revenant, which is the next film from Birdman director Alejandro González Iñárritu.

Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens is released 18th December.
