Filmmaker Antoine Fuqua directs the 60-year-old actor alongside Ethan Hawke and Chris Pratt in their forthcoming movie 'The Magnificent Seven' - which is a Hollywood remake on the 1960 classic western that starred Steve McQueen - and revealed Denzel had a natural desire to look after everyone and was a great "leader" during filming.

Antoine revealed: "Denzel is the lead in the film and he's definitely a leader on set. But he believes in leading from behind - something he learned from Nelson Mandela, who always said that 'the sheepherder leads from behind.' At the beginning of the shoot, Denzel went into every castmember's trailer and had a talk with each one."

Denzel will receive the Cecil B. DeMille award at the 73rd Annual Golden Globes Awards on Sunday (10.01.16) and follows in a long line of stars who have previously been honoured.

George Clooney was the 2015 recipient while others who have won the award include Woody Allen, Jodie Foster, Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Robin Williams, Michael Douglas, Al Pacino, Harrison Ford and Barbara Streisand.

And Antoine - who first met the actor on 'Training Day' in 2000 after Denzel specifically requested him for the role - thinks he is a worthy recipient of the accolade.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: "What's it like finding out Denzel Washington wants you to direct his next movie? It's like getting a phone call from Muhammad Ali or Michael Jordan saying they want you to coach them."
