Deadpool, which sees Ryan Reynolds take on the title role, hit the big screen back at the beginning of February and has been met with critical acclaim as well as enormous box office success.

So far, the film has grossed $746 million at the global box office, surpassing the $742.1 million that was posted by The Matrix Reloaded back in 2003. It is now the biggest R-rated film of all time and continues to perform well at the global box office.

The movie has topped the box office in the U.S. and the UK and is, for now, the highest grossing movie of 2016. However, Disney film Zootropolis is closing in on $697 million and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has taken $420 million in its opening weekend.

However, Deadpool is still only the third highest grossing R-rated film in the U.S. and is still behind The Passion of the Christ and American Sniper. With a gross of $349.5 million in the U.S., the film looks set to overtake American Sniper's haul of $350.1 million. It may not quite close the gap on The Passion of the Christ, which is out there with $370.8 million.

Deadpool has been a passion project for actor Reynolds, who first took on the role of Wade Wilson back in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009. He, along with passionate fans, have been trying to bring a solo film to the big screen ever since.

The movie saw Tim Miller makes his feature film directorial debut and Deadpool was one of the most anticipated comic book movies of the year - needless to say, it has set a very high benchmark for all those to follow in 2016. It may not end up as the highest grossing film in this genre, but it will end 2016 as one of the most acclaimed.

Reynolds has already expressed his desire to return to the role and there is already talk of a sequel in the pipeline. The actor has also revealed that he would like to being an X-Force film to the big screen sooner rather than later. I guess we are going to have to watch this space.

Deadpool can still be seen in UK cinemas.
