David Twohy says it is great to see Riddick fans getting behind the franchise and wanting to see more.
Twohy is back in the director's chair this week as Riddick hits the big screen; the third film in the franchise and the first since The Chronicles of Riddick nine years ago.
And the director admits that it was the fans that him realise that this franchise could still move forward with more projects.
Speaking to Collider the director said: "It feels good. I guess you don’t make any franchise movies unless the fans are there.
"The difference is that there was a time when we thought the franchise wouldn’t be going forward, and they helped us realize that that shouldn’t be. They felt unfulfilled, and that mirrored what Vin [Diesel] and I were feeling.
"So, it took us awhile, but Vin and I sat down and started thinking about, 'Okay, what do we do to correct this situation?' It didn’t have to be a big, huge project. It just had to be Riddick, back in action."
Vin Diesel returns to the title character, as well as serving as producer on the new film.
Riddick is out now.
